Glossary of Terms

LV Low Voltage - Normally used to refer to up to 1000 volts
   
HV High Voltage - Normally refers to up to 11,000 volts
   
EHV Extra High Voltage - Normally refers to up to 33,000 volts
   
DNO Distribution Network Operator - The company that operates the cables and switchgear that enables transmission of the electricity supply to the final consumer, such as EDF, Central Networks, CE Electric etc
   
REC Regional Electricity Company - The older reference to the regional companies, such as Yorshire Electricity, East Midlands Electricity, Sothern Electric etc
   
Contestable Works That part of the works that can be carried out by a customer other than the DNO, such as installation of on-site switchgear and cables.
   
Non-Contestable Works That part of new connection works that can only be carried out by the DNO, such as final connecton to their live network. 
   
Supplier The actual supplier of electricity, such as Powergen, British Gas etc
   
SAP Senior Authorised Person - An individual authorised to carry out HV switching operations and issue of Safety Documentation to release HV apparatus for safe working.  May also be a Local Control Engineer
   
AP

Authorised Person - An individual authorised to carry out HV and/or LV switching operations.

   
CP Competent Person - An individual authorised for access to DNO substations and may also be authorised for receipt of Safety Documents and/or taking charge of a Working Party.
